Beautiful Creatures is
an novel written By Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl and can be found at https://www.slideshare.net/resuri2/beautiful-creatures-book-1-by-kami-garcia-and-margaret-stohl in 2018. The story
starts by Ethan Wate has lived in small town Gaitlin for his entire life. Then,
when new girl Lena Deschannes moves to town, everything changes and make some
conflicts on this novel. Lena, a beautiful girl who is unlike anyone that
Ethan’s met before. Lena also be the girl that has been haunting Ethan dreams
and nightmares for weeks. Climax on this novel is when Lena tried to make
decission for become a dark side on 16 birthday’s. Resolution on this novel is
when Lena and Ethan are work together to fight an age-old curse and one of the Lena eye’s are
changed like chester in the dark side.
I think this novel is
presented the setting in a good way which explained the place clearly enough. “Gatlin wasn’t like the small towns you saw in the movies, unless it was
a movie from about fifty years ago. We were too far from Charleston to have a Starbucks or a McDonald’s.”, (Beautiful Creatures 7, Garcia & Stohl). Based on the arcticle
from Rose (2010) explained that setting is one of the important elements which
needed to reflect the turbulence of the story.” It means the narrator have
already described the important elements which the setting of the place clearly
on this novel. However, I also think
this novel is presented in a poor characterization. Take the narrator for example. Beautiful Creatures has such rich
descriptions of the setting which a town and life in small town. “All we had in Gatlin was
a Dar-ee Keen, since the Gentrys were too cheap to buy all new letters when
they bought the Dairy King. The library still had a card catalog, the high
school still had chalkboards, and our community pool was Lake Moultrie, warm
brown water and all.”, (Beautiful Creatures 7, Garcia & Stohl). However, I cannot
tell what Ethan looks like. I have no idea about him. According
to research from Martin (2004) stated that,
“characterization
is stylistic and narrative techniques for the representation of human features,
actions, intentions, desires and traits in the novel”. It means at least the narrator
should described characterization of the character clearly on this novel. Moreover,
I think the plot of this novel engage the readers with
curious feeling. It showed in a part which Lena 16 birthday that the final day
of her decision. Based on the article from Nownovel (2016), a plot outline
should curiosity and establishes cohesion. The combination with a bit dismaying part in
characterization makes Beautiful Creatures still was a compelling read that’s memorable enough to recommend to
fans of supernatural romance novel like Twilight.
